Armed with a degree in Electrical Engineering and a year of additional study at the prestigious Sorbonne in France, Abram had the privilege of being taught by Marie Curie, the renowned inventor of X-ray technology.

Company History

Beta-Calco’s journey is one of innovation and expansion. We trace our roots back to the remarkable vision and entrepreneurial spirit of Abram Aronovsky, a multilingual electrical engineer hailing from Lithuania. Born with an innate curiosity and a passion for languages, Abram's journey in the lighting industry began in 1939 when he relocated to England.

The Founding Context

Due to his expertise, Abram was hired as a qualified electrical engineer by the national service, where he was tasked with designing electrical communication systems for the Lithuanian army. However, with the looming threat of war, Abram made the pivotal decision to migrate to England before the outbreak of hostilities. It was during this tumultuous period that Abram saw an opportunity to make a difference and contribute to the war effort.

At the beginning of World War II, Abram purchased a company specializing in the production of electrical components for military applications. This acquisition marked the birth of Beta Lighting, which would later evolve into the renowned Beta-Calco. The company's initial location was a converted chapel adjacent to a textile factory in the textile-rich region of northern England. Over the course of 15 years, Beta Lighting's success necessitated a move to a larger facility in Bradford, England.

Ongoing Improvements

Throughout its history, Beta Lighting demonstrated a keen eye for emerging trends and a willingness to embrace innovation. The company's forward-thinking approach led to numerous projects in shopping centers and churches, where Beta Lighting's lighting solutions showcased their ability to create immersive and aesthetically pleasing environments. Always at the forefront of design, Beta Lighting consistently anticipated the next big trend, staying ahead of the industry curve.

One notable achievement came with the introduction of low-energy lighting. Beta Lighting's dedication to energy efficiency and innovative design garnered them the first-place award in the Standard Lamp (S.L.) Commercial category of the S.L. Philips Energy Luminaire Competition. Their award-winning luminaire was selected to replace traditional downlights in the prestigious Barbican Center in London, showcasing Beta Lighting's commitment to cutting-edge lighting solutions.

After Abram Aronovsky

In the late 1980s, Abram Aronovsky retired, leaving behind a legacy of innovation and excellence. David Silver, who joined the company in the 1970s, assumed responsibility for expanding sales beyond domestic borders. Utilizing his deep understanding of the industry and building on Beta Lighting's success at home, David focused on establishing and strengthening business relationships across Europe and Asia.

During this period, the lighting industry underwent a significant shift with the advent of compact fluorescent lamps and a rising demand for energy-saving lighting solutions. David's strategic efforts were key in positioning Beta Lighting at the forefront of this change. He adeptly introduced Beta Lighting's advanced and efficient lighting technologies to these new markets, thereby catalyzing the company's transformation into an international lighting leader. His skill in navigating international markets and his acute perception of varying market needs were crucial in cementing Beta Lighting's foothold in these important regions, laying a solid foundation for the company's future growth and partnerships.

The next generation of leadership arrived with Remy Silver, who joined the company after graduating as an engineer. Recognizing the immense potential in the North American market, Remy established Beta-Calco's Canadian office, aptly named Beta-Calco, as an abbreviation for Beta Commercial Architectural Lighting Company. Remy steered the company towards unprecedented success. His intrinsic design intuition and forward-looking mindset, succeeding the company’s legacy, catapulted Beta-Calco into a realm of pioneering LED lighting solutions. Within seven years, Remy turned the Beta-Calco satellite office into the new headquarters of the Beta brand.

Under Remy's stewardship, Beta-Calco flourished by consistently predicting upcoming trends, staying ahead of industry shifts, and pushing the limits of what was conceivable in product design. As Beta-Calco’s growth persisted, Remy reinforced its standing as a global innovator and fortified its position at the forefront of the ever-evolving lighting landscape.

Modern Lighting Leadership

In 2016, Etan Silver joined Beta-Calco, filling the role of Chief Financial Officer (CFO). His financial acumen and strategic foresight catalyzed a broader scope of innovation and category expansion.

Etan was then appointed President in 2018, overseeing a period marked by operational adjustments and market development. His leadership during this phase was focused on adapting to changing market conditions and improving efficiency.
